Anti Comment Spam: getting started
1. Install the plugin
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for Kapatagan Anti Comment Spam once it’s listed on WordPress.org, or click Upload Plugin and choose the .zip file you received.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
2. Check the settings
Protection starts as soon as the plugin is active, with safe defaults. To see or change what’s switched on, go to Settings → Kapatagan Anti Spam. Each option explains itself in one line.
The StopForumSpam check is off at first. Turn it on there if you want commenters checked against the shared spammer list.
3. Clean up old spam (optional)
- Set “What happens to spam” to Just show me and start a scan. Nothing changes yet.
- Look over what it found in the Spam Log.
- If it looks right, switch to Move to Spam, Move to Trash or Delete forever and scan again.
The scan runs in small background batches, so you can keep using your site while it works.
Tip: back up your site before using “Delete forever”. Deleted comments can’t be brought back.
Common questions
Will it block real comments?
Bots are stopped outright, but anything that merely looks suspicious goes to your Spam folder instead of being deleted, so you can rescue it. Please let us know when that happens so we can improve the rules.
Do visitors need JavaScript?
Yes, for the real-browser check, which stops most bots. Almost every visitor has it on. If your site needs to accept comments without JavaScript, you can switch that check off in the settings.
Does it send my visitors’ data anywhere?
Not unless you turn on the StopForumSpam check. Even then, only the IP address and a hashed email are sent. Our privacy policy has the details.
Can I use it with Akismet?
Yes, though most sites won’t need both.
